A great treatment in the skincare industry is starting to gain popularity… it’s called mandelic acid. It has been around for quite some time as a treatment for acne, fine-lines and wrinkles, rosacea, and a variety of other conditions. Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, which is the key ingredient in many different skincare products, such as serums, cleansers, moisturizers, toners, masques, and eye-lift creams, just to name a few. It is these types of acids which are the key factors in determining how effective a skincare product is. Mandelic Acid, despite being around for many years, has failed to gain popularity, especially when compared to other skincare ingredients, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid etc. Salicylic acid for example, is the key ingredient in most acne products and we’ve all seen the multi-million dollar ads online and on television for Neutrogena, proactive, Clearasil; these products all contain salicylic acid! You’re probably thinking that mandelic acid’s lack of popularity until now, is directly related to how effective it is…wrong! The hurdle its had to overcome is a lack of marketing from small company suppliers in the industry. For the most part, small companies have been the dominant suppliers in the mandelic acid industry. This is ironic because mandelic acid cleansers have been shown to be a far more effective treatment for acne when compared to salicylic acid cleansers. This is in part due to mandelic acid’s antibacterial properties which kill the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. It’s also effective in healing red mark scars left over from acne, diminishing the appearance of pores, and treating acne related inflammation. So now you might be saying, if it’s so effective, why haven’t larger corporations wanted a piece of the action?
