Do You Want Your Kids to Become Booklovers?
One of the most difficult roles of parents is teaching their children how to read. For most parents this may not seem to be a problem. But there are just special cases when the child refuses to pick up a pen and write or even read. This is because they have not developed an interest for reading books. So what must you do as a parent to solve this problem?
Kids love to watch what their parents do whether it be putting a makeup, cleaning the house, or (you’re right) reading a book. If you want to encourage your little ones to really love reading, let them see you read books more often. Ask your child to sit beside you whenever you are reading. This will rouse up interest and soon you will see your child holding a book too.
You’re child will not turn into a bookworm overnight. Don’t make the mistake of buying him a whole set of science encyclopedia as soon as he shows interest. Allow time to gradually transform your kid into a nerd. The best you can do during this stage of metamorphosis is to always have reading materials available for him to read. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an encyclopedia. A comic book will actually do.
Organize your bookshelf at home and put a distinction between educational books like dictionaries and encyclopedias and casual reads like magazines, newspapers and story books. This will teach your child how to differentiate books that are suitable for learning and books for pure fun and enjoyment.
Right after finishing a good story with your kid, encourage him to share an opinion or ask questions regarding the story. This will help develop your child’s reasoning and thinking skills. Not only that, this will also keep the story always fresh in his mind whenever he wants to share it to other kids.
Above from being a nerd and the smartest student in class, you would want your child to know the most important lesson he can get from reading which is pleasure and enjoyment. Nothing can beat the stress out of your child’s life than reading a good book.
