Plan For Treating ADHD
What is your plan for treating ADHD? Do you have a media policy in place? Let us have a look at that because the amount of time that kids spend in front of a screen nowadays is just phenomenal. The effects on their brains and development is causing some concern. So, do you limit your child’s playing of video games, play station, computer, mobile phone and TV to a few hours day?
Researchers have found that when the video game playing time of two hours was exceeded, then those kids had real attention problems at home and at school. As the ADHD child may already have problems of distraction and inattentiveness, then this is particularly important. There seems to be a definite relationship in that the more time spent on these games, the more their attention became impaired.
What is the role of encouraging healthy sleep and making up the sleep deficit in your plan for treating ADHD? Rhode Island Hospital researchers interviewed psychiatrists about this and found that there were prescribing sleeping pills for children who were already receiving psychostimulant drugs for ADHD and other mental disorders.
Whether your ADHD child is on these drugs or not, what are you doing to help them with their sleep patterns? Winding down time with no computers or TV an hour before bedtime works very well. Also, during the day, to ensure that there is enough green time and exercise activities built in to get rid of hyperactivity. That also makes it easier for them to get off to sleep. But if they are glued to a screen, forget it, because the light from these screens upsets their circadian rhythms and they become wide awake. Result? Another sleepless night. This also goes for adults checking their email late at night.
An integral part of your plan for treating ADHD will be to make sure that all the routines and structures in the family are in place and working and that everyone knows the rules. There are precise rewards and consequences for all behavior issues and behavior charts help to keep track of everything. ADHD kids really thrive on order and routine and like the step by step approach of tasks being broken down. This helps them enormously with getting things done and applies equally well to homework.
You will notice that I have not mentioned the choice of which type of medication yet in the plan for treating ADHD and I have done that deliberately. The reason is to emphasise that medication whether allopathic, herbal or homeopathic, is just a way of alleviating ADHD symptoms. Homeopathy goes a step further because it treats the whole child.
