What to Expect if You’re Expecting Twins
Getting the news that you’re going to be having twins can be quite the shocker. Most people don’t even think about the possibility of twins before it hits them. Now that you know you’re going to be having twins, what can you expect? Here’s what’s in store for you in the coming months.
In general, you want to prepare for your baby’s delivery ahead of schedule by several weeks. That means that you should have your supplies, your cribs ready, etc all before you generally would if you were just having a single child.Because twin pregnancies tend to take more time to prepare for. It can be easy to realize too late that it really took more time than necessary. Twins also have a higher rate of complications – You don’t want to risk being unprepared for the babies if you had to spend some time in the hospital unexpectedly.
Once you’ve had the babies, then you have the first few months of child rearing. This period is going to be a little bit tough. You’re raising two kids at the same time. That means twice the crying, twice the diaper changing, twice the feeding, twice of almost everything.
Having twins is going to attract a lot of attention. People are naturally curious about twins – They want to meet them, to play with them, to touch them. This won’t go away – From the day they’re born, it’s going to be a curiosity.
Identity may become an issue at some point. The twins can often have a hard time knowing who they are – Because so many people mix up their names and they look exactly like their counterpart, they can end up having a hard time knowing what separates them from their twin and from everyone else. You as the parent have the opportunity to help them make sure they know they’re unique by helping them find unique hobbies and unique things they like.
It’s easier than it sounds, but it does take some time getting used to. Make sure that you get your twins on the same sleep and eating schedule – or else it’ll be nearly impossible to get anything done.
These are some of the things you can expect in the few months. Raising twins is both difficult and incredibly rewarding – You’re in for quite the treat.
