Choosing The Best Type Of Candy Molds for Your Homemade Candies
Appearance and Presentation of homemade candy also does make a difference. This is the primary reason why it would be an excellent idea to invest in candy molds. Decorative molds are absolutely essential for different small candies and treats, and these can also be utilized when making a special batch of chocolate with the kids.
Now, as for the actual materials used in the molds, many are manufactured from durable silicone while others are made from plastic. Additionally there also are ones made from metal, though these are usually more expensive than the silicone or plastic varieties. Most molds come in either a sheet or tray form.
Silicone molds are extremely durable and can be slightly bent. This single movement can break loose even the stickiest pieces from the mold.
Your next best option when it comes to molds are the metal ones, because these are able to withstand the high temperatures of the candy batch mixture. Naturally, metal molds are definitely not as flexible as the silicone based molds.
To stop the mixture from sticking to the metal molds, you need to apply a small amount of butter to the individual cavities prior to pouring. Since candy is not able to latch onto grease, it will be a lot easier to remove later. Do the same with the sheet tray or baking liner that you will be using to collect the finished candies. A small amount of non-stick cooking spray or grease will prevent bits of paper from adhering to the hardened candy.
There are three different types of candy molds to select from.
1. Flat candy molds
These are basic molds which provide candy makers to make different candies and chocolates with specific designs (such asanimal shapes, holiday symbols, Christmas decorations, etc.). They come in a large selection and fairly inexpensive.
The hot candy mixture is carefully poured into the mold and simply given the opportunity to harden. If all goes well according to plan, the candy can simply be popped out of the mold when it’s ready.
This is one of the most common problems encountered by beginners: having the mixture stuck to the candy molds. Since they are essentially rigid, people have difficulty popping out pieces of chocolate and candies. To avoid this problem yourself, we highly recommend that you use the silicone type. This makes flat candy molds an excellent choice to use if you are just beginning and with out much experience.
2. 3-D candy molds
As the name implies, these are utilized to create 3-D candy designs and figures and can be used for a variety of purposes, not just candy making. These molds are perfect when you want detail on all sides of the candy and will create a really professional customized look. You can purchase a reliable 3D mold for around $3 a piece. Using this type takes a little more skill, but still easy with a little practice. I would recommend this type for those who already have some candy making experience.
3. Hollow candy molds
Hollow molds, much like 3-D type above, allow you to create three-dimension designs with hollow cavities. This empty hollow space on the inside of the design can be used for additional fillings, such as peanut butter, cream filling, or melted caramel. I would recommend these more for advanced candy makers or those looking to experiment.
As you can tell each different candy mold type has their own unique advantages and disadvantages. By selecting the right mold for your candy and one your comfortable with, you will have best opportunity for success!
