Parenting and Green Living, do these two even go together? It is easy to become lost in an endless mountain of laundry, living and disposable products that are way too convenient when you are a busy parent.
It is just as easy to join the eco-friendly parent society and move forward in a more positive direction once you know the secrets of the eco-friendly trade. First we have to shatter the myth that to be green we have to live an all or nothing life style. Nothing could be farther than the truth.
We can start by getting rid of all the disposable products we can and replacing them with more eco-friendly products while still being realistic about what we can’t or shouldn’t replace without ease.
Bring you children up to respect the ideas of a green friendly lifestyle. Teach them the values behind the ideas you are implementing. A big part of creating the ‘future’ is evaluation of the past and present. Remember the three R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Let’s take a closer look at these. As a parent you want to reduce the amount of everything you can. You also want to reuse as much as you can and recycle things like paper, plastic and the likes.
Let’s take a look at kids crafts, you can use both sides of paper or you can decorate both sides of the picture and flip it over when you hang it showing one side this week and one side the following week. Do you have mail you no longer have a need for?
Can the kids draw on the back of it or the envelope? Why not reuse it and recycle it later? Hey Kids, hang the laundry outside. This cuts costs and saved money and electric and other resources. It also connects your energy to the earth. Try it – you might like it! If you try, you will soon see, nothing goes together better than parenting and green living.
At first this may seem like it is hard to get started and you may second guess everything. This is okay at first. Like anything else you do, you must learn how to do it and think about the ‘why’ you want to do it. It is these hows and whys that make it worth the effort to take action. Try it and soon you will see it is well worth it.
