Ways to Burglary Proof Your Apartment
If you’ve recently moved into a new apartment or are simply concerned about the safety of your current apartment, you should know that there are many affordable and easy ways to burglary-proof your apartment. All it takes is a little work on your part, and you can make yourself, your family, and your possessions much safer.
First of all, realize that prevention is the best cure. If you haven’t yet rented your apartment or if you’re looking for a new one, be sure that you research more than just the floor plan and the rent. Research the neighborhood itself. Find out the local crime rates, and try to steer clear of areas or complexes that have a high incidence of break-ins.
Before you move in or even if you’re already moved in, ask the leasing agent or landlord what he or she does to screen residents. The best apartments will not admit those who have committed serious crimes or who are on parole. Also, practice common sense safety measures such as always locking your doors and windows, even during the day. Whenever possible, try to move into a second or higher floor apartment, as these are much more difficult to break into and thus much less likely to be burglarized.
Secondly, get to know your neighbors. The more people you know and are on a friendly basis with, the more people you have watching out for you. Find someone you trust and tell him or her when you plan on going out of town or being away for any period of time – even overnight. Also find out if there is any kind of neighborhood watch program and sign up for it. As a kindness, do the same thing for your neighbors. Watch for any suspicious behavior, such as unknown cars parked in the driveway, and report them to your leasing office.
Finally, take small, smart steps to protect yourself. If you have any large windows that are easily seen into, get curtains and blinds and don’t leave them open. Also, do not place any valuables, such as a large television, in front of windows or where they are visible to others. This is a clear sign that you have money or that you own expensive things and puts you at a higher risk for burglaries. You can also install small door and window alarms that chime if they are opened.
These are very affordable, especially when compared to traditional burglar alarms and can be a real lifesaver. If you are allowed animals in your apartment, consider getting a dog. If not, think about purchasing a doorbell that plays a dog’s barks when used. This is an easy way to fool burglars into thinking you have added protection. Never leave a spare key in any predictable place, and always be alert and aware.
